Armed to Protect: Guns In Schools
Protecting the second amendment is very important in today’s world and always will be. Our constitution states that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, it is part of how America was formed and what our founding fathers wanted to protect us from which is a tyrannical government. It is important for LHS students to understand the purpose of guns and the significance of high school students voting wise as they grow up to become citizens who can vote.
We have all read headlines along the lines of “School shooting, twenty killed, many more injured”. Likewise, we’ve also seen the terror that goes through children and teachers alike concerning this issue. School shootings are an issue that need to be stopped; if not stopped then controlled. If a person with a gun gets into the school, there should be an extra pillow of security before the worst happens. School shootings have sparked an argument about how guns should be represented in society. Many of these stories always start with a disgruntled student (former or present) getting their hands on a gun but what if it was the other way around? If teachers carried guns they could be used as a method of self defense, or could scare the intruder away to be taken care of by authorities.
School shootings are what we never want to see. It puts children up against something they have never faced and should never have to face. If the teacher carries the gun they could potentially kill the gunman before they have a chance to harm them or the students. They could also scare the shooter into dropping their weapon out of fear, hopefully resulting in nobody being harmed on either side.
Some negatives about this topic include the fact that we are leaning away from possessing guns and the fact that having guns and shooting them could emotionally scar children. The large amount of school shootings and mass murders that have been occurring over the past few years have sent the media to argue that we should take away the second amendment, banning guns completely. If we are leaning down this path, the possible implementation of arming teachers with guns only appears more and more unlikely. At a young age students might look at their teachers a different way because they are capable of taking a person’s life. The same can be argued about the other side however, because while initially threatening, it only improves the chance of a teacher saving a life as opposed to taking one.
Teachers carrying guns could be revolutionary to how we look at school shootings. We would be safer with this extra layer of protection. We should have the obligation to carry guns when the fact that if and when something happens, we need to be prepared.
