Physical Activity Saves Lives

    Although it may not seem like it, it is true that physical activity saves lives and is at the core of good health and well being in every corner of the world.   Research shows that regular physical activity can help reduce your risk for several diseases and health conditions and improve your overall quality of life.

    According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in two adults live with a chronic disease. Only half of adults get the physical activity that they need to either reduce or prevent chronic diseases. A chronic disease is a health condition that is persistent or long-lasting in its effects or simply is a disease that comes with time. Over time, if one’s body does not exercise enough, then it is naturally going to multiply in body fat since fat and calories are not being burned.

    Physical activity is something that does a lot more than just help people get in shape. Regular physical activity can reduce blood pressure for people who typically have high blood pressure. Naturally, physical activity reduces body fat because your body burns calories when it is exercising and creating sweat. It also helps reduce body fat by building or preserving muscle mass and improving the body’s ability to use calories.

    Some diseases that can develop over time due to a lack of physical activity are heart disease, strokes, and obesity.

    While a person is exercising, they are actually strengthening their heart muscle, lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow, and increasing the heart’s working capacity. Without these functions, it is very common for someone to develop heart diseases and constantly have strokes because the heart is unable to function properly.

    One may wonder how much physical activity they need in order to stay healthy and the answer differs for every single person. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, they recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or at least 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. One hundred fifty minutes a week is a little bit more than 20 minutes a day doing any sorts of aerobic exercises.

    Overall, physical activity builds a strong and healthy nation. With physical activity, the risk of depression decreases, sleep is improved, bone health is increased and it extends years of active life, it also improves emotions and even sometimes improves academic performance.

    Over the last 40 years, the rate of physical activity has decreased mightily. One major cause for this is the increase in electronics. Since electronics have taken over the lives of many kids and adults, their time spent exercising has decreased significantly. According to the Health Data organization, in 2019, there are roughly 160 million people who are obese in the United States of America. Over 30 percent of kids under the age of 20 are obese and this is a direct result in the revamped amount of electronics in today’s society. As it is over 30 percent of kids who are obese now, it was roughly only 10 percent of kids under the age of 20 who were obese in the year 1980.

    As the weather is starting to become nicer, do not be afraid to get a little exercise in everyday and enjoy the weather. It may not seem like it now, but the more exercise you do as a kid, the less likely you will obtain a disease that could have easily been prevented.
