Many big names performed at the 2019 Oscars, watched around the world by millions. Among them, however, was a Rhode Islander. David Rawlings is an guitarist from North Smithfield, who currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee. He performs with his music partner, Gillian Welch. The bluegrass duo are climbing the country music charts after performing their nominated song for “Most Original Song,” “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings.’’
The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, is the ceremony where the Academy recognizes excellence in cinematic achievements. The awards night was filled with excitement and intense emotions among celebrities and viewers. Along with every previous year, the fashion was diverse, and had a chance to be displayed on the red carpet. This special night consisted of a wide range of artists from all around who may be popular, or unheard of, like Dave Rawlings.
Native Rhode Islander, Dave Rawlings, performed. Many talented musicians were asked to perform on the awards show that has been going on since 1929. People were nominated for different categories of awards based on their genres of musical ability. Artists ranging from Cardi B to to The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed on the night of February 24th, and several others were nominated for various awards.
During Rawlings’ childhood in North Smithfield, he initially did not know how to play guitar, until my grandfather taught him to play. After realizing that he had a passion for music, Rawlings attended Berklee College of Music after going to North Smithfield High School, and went into the music business to create songs in the genre of “Bluegrass Country.”
A current Lincoln resident spent time with him during his childhood, “He was very talkative, and slept with his guitar in bed.” Even though Dave Rawlings is off making music in Nashville, some of my family still stays in contact with him. Rawlings has not forgotten Rhode Island, and remembers his home when he performs on tour.
