Raising the Spirit

You hop in the car to make your quick runs to the grocery store and turn on the radio. The channel just happens to be on Lite Rock 105 and suddenly “Jingle Bells” begins to play unexpectedly through the speakers. Once you get home, you turn on your TV to see Hallmark channel is on and snow is falling into the main character’s hair and a big Christmas tree stands behind her. No, it’s not December and it very well still April, so why on earth are Christmas melodies playing?

At these times of panic and social distancing certain channels have felt the year to raise some spirit. The holiday season is viewed to be when people seem the most unified so the channels decided that playing Christmas music and movies seemed like the right way to spark that holiday spirit without actually seeing each other. Who can really blame them for their efforts?

Some people would be mortified to see or hear anything about Christmas outside of the months of December. Others, however, see the Holiday music as a good idea during social distancing. People are in panic mode, businesses are being shut down, sports are on hold, and many important and traditional events have been canceled all due to the coronavirus. The idea is, if the Christmas music can bring some amount of joy back into people, then it’s meaningful and doing its job at raising spirits. Even if it isn’t the holiday spirit, but people’s spirit’s in general, then its job is being fulfilled and that’s all that channels like Lite Rock 105 and Hallmark wanted from it.

If Christmas music is something that you enjoy, you might just want to turn on that radio or find that perfect Christmas movie to watch during social distancing. The idea is that if everyone takes part and helps with small things like the holiday channels are doing, then these hard times can be as smooth as they possibly can be. There have been people doing extraordinary things for others during these times. For example, some people are helping out with surgical masks while others are helping homeless people with things they need.
